Steele doubts Reid's 'fitness to lead' – Yahoo! News

Republican National Chairman Michael Steele said Monday that if Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) does not apologize for comparing opponents of health care reform to those who resisted emancipation, Democrats should oust him as their leader.

“Harry Reid wandered far out of bounds with his absurd and offensive comments,” Steele said in a statement. “This is inexcusable, deeply insulting and an arrogant abuse of the Democrat Party's unchecked power in Congress. This is an elected official saying anything, doing anything, running roughshod over any citizen who opposes his left-wing effort to jam big-government run health care down our throats.”

During the continuing health care debate on the Senate floor Monday, Reid went after GOP leaders for using stall tactics to try to kill the bill.

“You think you've heard these same excuses before?” Reid said of GOP talking points. “You're right. In this country there were those who dug in their heels and said, 'Slow down, it's too early. Let's wait. Things aren't bad enough.' – about slavery.”

These were the same arguments used against women’s suffrage and civil rights legislation, Reid said.
Republicans immediately jumped on Reid for his remarks. And in his statement, Steele suggested Reid may no longer have the “suitability” to lead.

“Having made this disgraceful statement on the floor of the United States Senate, Mr. Reid should immediately apologize on the Senate floor to his colleagues, to his constituents and to the American people. If he is going to stand by these statements, the Democrats must immediately reconsider his fitness to lead them,” Steele said. “To suggest that passing this horrible bill is anything akin to ridding our country of slavery is terribly offensive and calls into question Mr. Reid’s suitability to lead.”
